LOCAL SHOW NOTES, 2022
Happy to report!
Happy to be there for Caribou’s opener at Stubb’s, to learn about Ela Minus’s music LIVE, dancing in her pink hued glow ahead of Valentine’s Day
Saying hi to Mike Garrido, and JOAQUÍN at SOHO HOUSE Austin; hard reset in March
Mitski at ACL Moody; I was Moody, too. I’d waited five years for this show, the room/experience/night all felt wrong to me. The night should have ended crying out back at Hotel Vegas, flashes of MONTAZ
My body was briefly at Stubbs for the Manchester Orchestra set-time only.
MY SXSW, No pre-purchased badge/band/tickets/favors/tricks. Filling up all 10 punch-holes on my SX22 participation card:
My starting position was sitting criss-cross on the Hotel Vegas floor to pay attention to a woman at work, Lucy Gooch, and later a kind sounding, Sister Ray.
I found myself at home, standing house right at Empire Control Room for Jabee, from my hometown OKC, hyping us with heart with That's How The Good Lord Works.
Then, drifting closer to the cloudy Empire Garage stage for the sway of Kiefer with Braxton Cook and Los Retros swooning Solo Tú.
Michelle Zauner, solo, at South Congress Hotel. Geeking cannot fully express how much I admire Zauner for her complete body of work and to be a witness to her commitment to craft. I felt contagious joy watching her have fun for herself during this wild week with a V playful and personal set, which she closed by dancing IN/With her audience to Sandstorm.
Hottest buzz of the week felt like MUNA! Pre-release of their self-titled album, Fresh from Phoebe’s label. Standing in the sun, Hot, Friday afternoon of southby crowd and guests, in the hotel courtyard, where I passed by a cute blue/green haired Claud too.
My first Faux Real experience, at Mohawk for the Daniel Johnston showcase, to learn the United Snakes of America hand choreography, and it was made even sweeter the next day to learn upclose that they are the most gracious people too.
Fast-forwarded into evening hours where I stand in a sea of heads with a short pov to catch my glimpses of Japanese Breakfast like magic again, singing from Sable
Best Shredder Forever = SASAMI! Her band rules so hard that the moshing behind me pushed my little bod all the way up until I was belly to the lip of Mohawk’s stage. In Prime time for the double-time live version of Not The Time from her first solo album. What I love most about this memory is watching her actively work while she is near closing this slaying set, still smiling, having fun while she's doing it. SASAMI's shrieks and smile melt my soul. And, I got a wet setlist pic.
I had the opportunity to see Weyes Blood perform solo sometime after 1 AM on the inside Mohawk stage, I was told. My body couldn’t stay a minute more.
All hail the groovy ladies of Los Bitchos, nailing the mood all over Austin this southbyweek!!!!! Shaking in what felt like summer weather to Tequila! Plus, the self-assurance and deep felt peace of eating vegan chili with my friends side stage. Happy.
Chef's kiss Crashing close to my weekend, with a full smile in praise of Sabrina Ellis on stage with A Giant Dog, a forever favorite local hometown band.
In gratitude this week/all year to my parents for raising me with bands, in the marching band section, running around backstages, and how to be in the audience.
Going with fresh ears, soft-smiling, to Soft Kill at Empire Control Room, w Friends based on Good Recommendations of Friends (relax your pretty face)
FULL HEART FREAKS @ Beach House at Moody Amphitheater, sprawling in the grass with a group of my hot and weird friends. Beautiful stars and vibes tonight. I love you, Austin, TX.
Charli XCX at ACL Moody; My #1 Icon of 2022, ICONIC Night in April! Link to my personal footage of Charli going berserk for Visions! (*dancer in vid is not me, but same energy applies)
Mike Garrido at Lolo Wine, for poetry line editing with natural orange wine until sunset
FONT at Hole in the Wall, with a good group for afters from our Poetry Reading
HAIM at Moody Amphitheater: Waltzing in to the finishing sweet notes from Faye Webster, but I didn't get enough of her set. Another year. Full force fun at the show 2night. + Internally nostalgic AF for the first time I saw the Haim sisters in Guthrie, OK!! for the Gentlemen on the Road Tour in 2013, and I wrote a 1000+ word piece about going for my college newspaper and they printed it in full with little-to-no edits AND my iphone pics. Lol look at me now
Porcelain, Reporting Live from the cheer section of Vegas for the bands First LIVE Show! S/o Ryan Fitzgibbon! Entertained by (what I identified as) a Joe Biden 2020 covid speech sampled by Abandoncy, and giggling for the live Q&A (Audience lead) and Star Trek references used by Borzoi. Introduced to Vegas’ buddy, Gus, working all summer long at Hotel Vegas.
Nothing short of *elated* to finally catch a CAPYAC show in Austin! Notorious for theme and a quality space cowboi puppet show at Scoot Inn! Unintentionally, going out to the eastside to celebrate during Pride w my best-Reader. YEE!
Lesser Care at Chess Club, post and pre Cheer Up, Charlie’s w El Paso crew
Los Bitchos! and Belle & Sebastian at Stubb’s; Heat of the summer! I danced so hard during Los Bitchos, a Stubb’s employee passed me a free water bottle! Good night.
Cola at Parish, and then talking their ear off about the newest Maggie Nelson at Yellow Jacket Social Club (he brought her up!!)
Making quick vegan pasta @ home for 1, then high-tailing it to Vegas for Porcelain and Flooding. LOOKING FRWD to FREE WEEK to see Porcelain @ Mohawk!
MUGGER at Chess Club! When I learned about this *new band* and *new club* earlier in the year, I knew I only needed patience for this ideal set night. Planted and replanted my Vagabond loafers a couple times getting softly pushed back and bracing in the chess space by the mugger mini mosh. Smiling bigtime! Support your local GRRRLS on Bandcamp!
JOAQUÍN at SOHO HOUSE Austin, for the space themed pool party, in support of a friend. In my mission, going to hear which track he’d play from RENAISSANCE, which dropped that day.

Then, quickly to Porcelain and Nevil (REUNITED???!) at Hotel Vegas. I arrived at this show in Levi’s over a wet black swimsuit and left with a classic photobooth strip of friends kissing and my dead iPhone.
Nuclear Daisies, for the First LIVE Show! at Hotel Vegas; The stage and audience crowded full w star power! You must see Nuclear Daisies urself ASAP @ FREE WEEK, too!
Chanel Tres at Emo’s, dancing my ass off. To Jason Smith at King Bee, spinning disco every Friday night 10-2, then finishing the night at a friend’s going away party at Coconut Club (music vibe off, imo/for me)
Mike Garrdio at Dante’s HiFi; spilling a martini on my Fancy Dinner Reformation Dress bc I’m still learning how to drink more than one.
I streamed the ACL live sets in the studio — James Blake, Arlo Parks, Omar Apollo, Samia, JBrekkie, The Marías and Paramore.
ACL LATE / James Blake Presents: CMYK, at Emo’s; I’m dancing in the mix! Feat. two cute friends who wanted to dance w me all night! A Delight! Styled my 2005 Coach slingbag for personal joy.
Good Crush Night - Lovelorn, Nuclear Daisies, and Portrayal of Guilt at The Lost Well for Levitation! Meeting the lead girls in the bathroom between sets, unintentionally, for a blurry photo, and proceeding to lose my mind in the pit during the intro of The Sixth Circle! God, I love this track.
K.G.L.W. up I-35 to The Criterion in OKC on Halloween night 2022 dressed as Wednesday Addams with my best friend. No show notes.
I’m back! at Hotel Vegas! Nice zoning noises night for Porcelain. Front and center, and respectfully ear plugged, @ Blank Hellscape (Our Best Local Noise Boys)
Going by the dress code to enjoy Texas’s Finest Band Alive, or someday dead, TV’s Daniel! Sticking around based on suggestion, and the mention of a harness worn for Urban Heat, which they more than delivered! making the entire crowd dirty dance at Hotel Vegas, to say the least! a new reason for the Vegas sweaty room we love.
Kneeling side stage for my queens leading MUGGER, wishing Lisa a HBD! Audio-recording good sounding mic-checks by Pussy Gillette
I warmed up too long in the studio and walked to The Parlor / missed the free pizza at the blank hellscape set!!! (SRY) Made an audio-based vlog about my walk to try to get over it in a creative way
iPhone recording my slight tardiness to walk up to Porcelain at Chess Club, where I lost my mind laughing too loud to myself at song transitions feat. #tastethebiscuit! All of my videos were not usable for social posts the following day, lmao! “Y’all want the sample again?” he said, and I recorded again, for a good memory! Thanking Fuck Money’s Alton for letting them borrow the kit! Liking the sound of Tunic, new to me, with New Music coming in April 2023, named after a Nancy Drew novel. I stood on the wall bench for this view! The Chess Club backlot of closeknits full of my favorite Austin Artists tonight; all talking, drinking, and smoking some cigarettes. Punks listening to Fleetwood, in the same way. And I’m standing still noting until I’m cut off by a friend. We go back in (laughing to myself at the MONTAZ sticker on the backdoor above the pull handle) to experience Fuck Money for the first time—
Shivering cold, but 100% going to Hotel Vegas tonight. Playing/driving myself in to Hannah Diamond’s Fade Away to see an old Austin favorite, Hidden Ritual. I skipped out of the building more than once creating new rituals of my own making.
Finale, attending my own kind of Holiday Party to send off 2022, to becoming a Freelance Writer, an alcohol-free nightcap (water), to just go listen to JOAQUÍN at SOHO HOUSE Austin, and enjoy being a total nobody in good company.
Made with love and support!
